Metro Vancouver Implements New Material Bans
and Increases in Disposal Fees

January 1, 2008 marked the start of Metro Vancouver’s new material bans.
The following is a list of both new and old materials are banned from our landfills:

• Corrugated cardboard(banned since 1990’s)
• Newsprint (1995)
• Office paper (1995)
• Gypsum drywall, commonly called Gyprock (1990’s)
• Paint, solvents, flammable liquids, gasoline
• NEW! Blue box recyclables
• NEW! Yard and garden waste
• NEW! Beverage containers, except for milk products
• NEW! Lead-acid (car) batteries
• NEW! Medications and pharmaceuticals
• NEW! Pesticides
• NEW! Vehicle tires
• NEW! Oil, filters and empty containers
• NEW! Electronic waste: includes personal computers, printers, TV’S, keyboards, etc.

Metro Vancouver will be monitoring and fining those companies that deliver banned materials from landfill. The material bans can result in a 50% surcharge over disposal costs. This means, that if a delivered load of material containers banned materials in excess of what is allowed a 50% surcharge will be applied to the load delivered.

In addition to the material bans Metro Vancouver has also increased the fees at landfill for garbage. The new rate is $68.00 per Metric Tonne.
