Urban Impact had a great session for some staff on setting some BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goals)’s and we came up with the idea of an Urban Impact event (sports, charity or other). We want to give back to the community and come up with an event that does just that and represents who we are.

First, The event has to represent who we are and what we stand for. Second, it has to give back. And thirdly, we want to raise some serious cash! What will this event be? We don’t know yet, but I am hopeful that the next few months will allow us to formulate a plan for such an event. Any bright ideas, please share! Criteria is simple (see above) and most importantly it has to rock!

Interestingly the thought of giving back to the community was the one BHAG that everyone agreed with. Cool, so many people all on the same page!

I think I might have tweeted or blogged this before, so sorry for the possible repetition. Rather then giving a gift – a donation to a favourite or local charity is a wonderful carbon reduced and thoughtful gift.

I have bribed my children to accept cash for donations as birthday gifts. Although it is terribly hard for them to get their minds around not receiving the wrapped gift from their friends, they seem to accept it (as long as I promise them a birthday gift of significance) and like the attention they get when other adults applaud their generosity.

Try it, you will like it, and so will your charity of choice.

Cancer is one of those diseases that has touched us all. Each of us can likely tell a story where the human spirit and medicine triumphed over this disease, and sadly it is likely that each of us can tell a story where the disease won and stole someone away.

April is Cancer month in Canada. The Canadian Cancer Society a remarkable organization calls on us all to give generously to help battle this disease. Urban Impact is doing its part to help raise awareness. As a company we have given $5,000 on behalf of all of our employees, and we have put the CCS logo and daffodil up on our trucks. This is the first time we have put another logo or icon up on our very distinct and clean trucks, we hope that the public will notice and consider a gift or donation to this worthy organization.

VanCity and Urban Shredding (division of Urban Impact) are proud to be providing a Shredathon for local residents of the Fraser Valley region. The Shredathon is at the VanCity Chilliwack from 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturday September 19, 2009. Residents and small businesses can bring their confidential materials have them shredded right before their eyes. In addition the new Hybrid Recycling truck is there as well to receive an extra boxes that people might have when dropping off their shredding. The Hybrid truck runs on its own battery that is charged while the motor is running. So when it is on site the engine won’t be running.

All participants are asked to donate $10 per box (if they want to) to the VanCity charity of choice. Last year we raised $800 or so at the last Shredathon in Chilliwack, we are hoping to beat it today!
