Why is Carbon Neutral so important?
Global warming has received a lot of press recently. That's why we believe that becoming carbon neutral is an essential and necessary business practice. Wouldn't it be wonderful, if all of us personally and corporately, would make the commitment to becoming carbon neutral, or how about carbon negative?
We believe that by becoming carbon neutral, Urban Impact's customers will receive their services in as environmentally sensitive and responsible way as possible
Urban Impact's "Plant One Here" Carbon Neutral program.

How does Urban Impact calculate their CO2 footprint?
All the fuel consumed by our vehicles (trucks, forklifts, skidsteers). |
| |
All the energy consumed in heating and operating our warehouse and offices. . |
In the future we hope to include in our carbon emission calculations:
All the fuel consumed by our employees commuting to and from work. |
| |
All the fuel and energy consumed by our suppliers providing services to Urban Impact. |
What are we doing about it in 2007?
This is the exciting part! We're going to plant 700 trees. One tree will off-set one tonne of CO2 over its lifetime.
Many companies offer carbon credits that you can purchase on the internet. Some credits are used to fund tree planting projects in developing nations, others use the funds to research alternative fuels, etc. Buying a carbon credit on the internet through a reputable organization is relatively inexpensive. We were tempted, but decided we wanted to do the real thing in our community.
In 2005, the Corporation of Delta ( www.corp.delta.bc.ca ) (located just south of Vancouver ) council committed to planting 20100 trees before 2010. Urban Impact has partnered with Delta to plant trees in our community. Delta is providing the land on which our trees will be planted and their staff's know how, Urban Impact is providing the money to put the trees in the ground.
In April 2007, our first tree planting adventure will begin. The site has been confirmed, and we are working to finalize the planting logistics. With the help of Nancy Mclean, Landscape Coordinator/Senior Planner, Corporation of Delta, we are going to plant 700 seedlings and trees in the middle of May of 2007. Planting 700 trees will more than off set our 2006 carbon footprint.
Planting the trees requires some organization; here are some of the tasks that have to be completed to get these trees to do their job.
A planting plan has to be established (what trees go where); |
| |
31 huge loads of compost have to be delivered to the site and spread out (carefully, so that it does not compact too much) so that we have a great planting environment for the seedlings |
| |
Planting the trees; |
| |
Biodegradable plastic covers will be put around each tree, to protect them and to act as a mini green house (so that the trees will out-grow the weeds); |
| |
Regular weeding; |
| |
Regular watering for the first two to three years (to make sure they succeed). |
Our site is will be planted with a variety of trees: Garry Oaks, Larch, Pines and Douglas Fir.
